For years, getting a new website meant paying a large sum upfront and then working out hosting and maintenance afterwards. More and more small businesses are now choosing a website subscription instead, paying monthly for everything in one place. So which is better? (If you’re still working out budgets, start with our guide to how much a website costs in Halifax.)
How a traditional build works
You pay a designer for the build, often half upfront and half on launch. Then you arrange hosting, renew your domain each year, and either maintain the site yourself or pay for a separate maintenance plan.
Good for: businesses with budget set aside and someone in-house who can look after the website.
How a website subscription works
You pay one monthly fee that covers the design, build, hosting, domain and ongoing care. There’s no large upfront cost, and your website is kept updated, backed up and secure every month.
Good for: start-ups, sole traders and busy owners who want a professional website without the upfront bill or the technical headaches.
Things to check before you sign up
Not all subscriptions are equal. Before you commit, ask:
- What’s included? Hosting, domain renewal, backups, updates and support should all be covered.
- How long is the minimum term? Ours is 12 months, then it runs month to month.
- Can I make changes? Find out whether edits are included or charged separately. With us, bigger jobs can be covered by a prepaid content pot.
- Who do I speak to? A real person who knows your website is worth a lot when something goes wrong.
